Guararapes lies in the north-west of São Paulo state, in the Araçatuba region, where the land is broad, gently undulating and given over largely to sugarcane and pasture. Like many towns in this part of the state, it was laid out on a regular plan, and from above its streets form an orderly chequerboard of near-square blocks with few interruptions.
The town grew with the railway that pushed west through the interior in the early twentieth century, and the line of the tracks still reads as a firm stroke on the map.
