Güines sits on the flat, fertile plain of Mayabeque province, south-east of Havana. The town follows the classic Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of streets and square blocks around a central plaza. The Mayabeque River passes nearby, and its curving line breaks the straight edges of the plan.
