Hakkâri sits high in the mountains of southeastern Turkey, near the borders with Iraq and Iran. The terrain decides almost everything about its shape. The town fills a narrow valley floor and climbs the lower slopes, so the streets bend and switch back instead of forming a grid. Much of the land around it is too steep to build on.
That constraint gives the map a strong character. Built-up areas stretch along the valley in a long, uneven band.
