Ibbenbueren sits in the Tecklenburger Land in northern North Rhine-Westphalia, at the point where the Teutoburg Forest ends in the north-west. On a map, the town lies at the foot of wooded ridges. The centre is compact, and residential areas spread out over gentler ground. The forest shows up as a dark, irregular band south of the streets.
For generations, the town's identity was tied to coal. Anthracite was mined under the Schafberg, a raised plateau next to the town, until the mine closed at the end of 2018. That closure ended one of the last deep coal-mining operations in Germany.
