Iten is the main town of Elgeyo-Marakwet County in western Kenya, set at around 2,400 metres on the edge of the Kerio Valley escarpment. It has become known worldwide as a training base for distance runners, and a sign welcoming visitors to the Home of Champions greets arrivals.
The town is small, clustered along its main road with a modest grid of side streets. From above, the most dramatic feature is just to the east, where the land drops sharply into the Kerio Valley.
