Iziaslav sits on the Horyn River in the west of Ukraine, and the river is the organising line of the whole map. It loops through the town in broad curves, separating older ground from later development and giving the street pattern its orientation. The town was long known as Zaslav, a name it carried for centuries before being renamed.
