Jaynagar and Majilpur grew up side by side in the South 24 Parganas district and have shared one municipality since the nineteenth century. Seen from above, the joined towns have no single centre. Narrow lanes branch off and meet again, houses cluster along them, and many small ponds sit among the blocks. The railway line
