Kani lies in southern Gifu Prefecture, in the Mino region, where the Kiso River comes out of the hills toward the Nōbi Plain. The river forms much of its southern boundary, and a smaller river, the Kani, flows through the city to join it. On the map, the older centre sits on low ground near the water, with newer districts on higher land around it.
Since the late twentieth century, Kani has grown as a commuter town for Nagoya. Many of its hilly areas were developed as planned residential districts.
