Kihnu lies in the northeastern Gulf of Riga, off the coast of Pärnu County, a short ferry ride from the mainland. It is small and low, elongated north to south, with forest covering much of the interior and a coastline of gravelly points and shallow bays. On the map it appears as a quiet shape crossed by only a handful of roads between its villages.
The island has four villages, Linaküla, Sääre, Lemsi and Rootsiküla, linked by lanes that run through forest and meadow.
