The Zhizdra river
The river curves beneath the town through meadows and oxbow lakes, drawing flowing lines that give the poster its main sense of movement.

Kozel’sk Map Poster & Print
Kozel’sk is one of the oldest towns in the Kaluga region, standing on the high bank of the Zhizdra river. From above, the historic centre sits on raised ground above the water, with streets spreading back from the river in a fairly regular pattern of low-rise blocks. The Zhizdra loops across the landscape below, bordered by wide water meadows, oxbows and stretches of forest.
The town's name has a firm place in Russian history. In 1238 Kozel’sk held out for about seven weeks against the army of Batu Khan, a resistance so stubborn that chroniclers say the invaders called it the evil city. Across the river, a few kilometres away, is the Optina Pustyn monastery, long a centre of Orthodox spiritual life and associated with visitors such as Gogol, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.
A Kozel’sk map poster brings together the compact old town, the curves of the Zhizdra and the green country around it. The river gives the design a strong, organic line, and the streets on the high bank form a neat counterpoint. It is a fitting image for anyone who knows the town, or who has travelled here on pilgrimage to Optina.

Town on the high bank
The old centre stands on raised ground above the floodplain, the same defensive position that let Kozel’sk resist the siege of 1238.
Road to Optina
Across the Zhizdra, a route leads through woodland to Optina Pustyn, linking the town with one of Russia's best-known monasteries.

Kozel’sk means something to people for many reasons: a family home, a pilgrimage, or an interest in medieval Russian history. A map poster keeps the town and its river close, in a form that looks calm and considered on any wall.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the year of a visit or a family name, and adjust the coordinates line. Pick one of five styles and download the files for $9, or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
