Lahat is the seat of Lahat Regency in South Sumatra, set in the foothills below the Bukit Barisan mountains. The Lematang River winds through the area, and from above, the town follows its banks and the valley floor, with streets spreading out on the flatter ground and roads climbing into the surrounding hills.
