Lahewa is on the northern shore of Nias, an island off the west coast of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. From above, the town is a short band of streets along the water, with a coastline that bends into a bay. Behind it, the land rises into green, lightly settled interior, crossed by only a few roads.
It is the main town of North Nias, and life here depends on the sea, fishing and the coastal road that links it to the rest of the island.
