Luz Ardiden lies in the Hautes-Pyrénées above the town of Luz-Saint-Sauveur, in the valley that leads south toward Gavarnie. The resort itself is modest in size, with a base area, car parks and lifts spread across open, largely treeless slopes. What gives it a strong shape on a map is the road that reaches it, climbing out of the valley in a long series of tight bends.
That road is known well beyond skiing. It has been used several times as a summit finish in the Tour de France, and cyclists ride it in summer when the slopes turn to pasture.
