Mabopane lies roughly 30 kilometres north-west of central Pretoria, within the City of Tshwane in Gauteng. On a map it forms a large area of planned residential streets, organised into sections that residents know by block letters, with schools, sports fields and churches set into the pattern. Neighbouring Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa extend the built-up area in several directions.
The township was developed during apartheid and was later incorporated into the Bophuthatswana homeland, before becoming part of South Africa again in 1994.
