Mahābād lies in the southern part of West Azerbaijan province, in a valley where the Mahabad River flows north toward Lake Urmia. The city stretches along the river with hills rising on either side, so on a map its outline follows the valley, long and fairly narrow. The older centre sits close to the water, and newer districts climb the slopes.
Just south of the city, a dam holds back the river in a reservoir whose irregular shape stands out clearly on the map.
