Marsberg lies in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the valley of the Diemel near the border with Hesse. The town has two distinct parts: Obermarsberg, the old settlement on a steep hilltop, and Niedermarsberg, which spreads along the river in the valley below. On a map, the contrast between the two is immediately visible.
The hilltop is historically significant. It is associated with the Eresburg, a Saxon stronghold captured by Charlemagne in 772 during his campaigns against the Saxons, an event linked to the destruction of the Irminsul sanctuary.
