Mauriti lies in the south of Ceará, in Brazil's semi-arid northeast, close to the state border with Paraíba. It is a municipality of farming communities spread across the sertão, with the urban seat as its main centre of trade, schooling and services. The landscape around it is dry for much of the year, and water storage shapes the pattern of the land.
From above, the town forms a fairly regular grid of streets around its central square and church, in the manner of many towns in the interior of the northeast. Roads leave in a few directions towards neighbouring municipalities. Beyond the edge of town, small reservoirs, dirt tracks and field boundaries break up the open country.
