Mbarara lies in south-western Uganda, in rolling country of hills and shallow valleys. The Rwizi River winds through the city, and the main streets run close to it, with the commercial centre compact and the residential neighbourhoods spreading up the surrounding slopes. The city is the traditional heart of Ankole, a region known for its long-horned Ankole cattle, whose enormous curved horns are a familiar image of western Uganda.
