Meiningen lies in the south of Thuringia, in the valley of the Werra between forested hills. For centuries it was the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen, and the town still bears that imprint. The Elisabethenburg Palace stands at the edge of the old town, and the Meiningen Theatre, famous for the theatre reforms of Duke Georg II in the nineteenth century, faces the English Garden.
From above, the historic centre is a compact oval of streets beside the river, with parks and green spaces on its edges. The Werra runs through the valley in a gentle curve, and railway lines follow it. Meiningen is also home to a steam locomotive works, one of the few places where steam engines are still maintained.
