Nanumanga lies in the north of Tuvalu, a small nation of low coral islands and atolls scattered across the central Pacific. Unlike many of its neighbours it is not a ring of islets around a lagoon but a single reef island, compact and rounded, with a fringing reef running around its edge. The island is low and green, covered in coconut palms and other vegetation, with its village and gardens set close to the shore.
