Nanyō lies in the Okitama basin in the south of Yamagata Prefecture, a flat valley surrounded by mountains. From above, the town looks like a patchwork. There are compact residential districts, long straight roads across the fields and, at the edges, forested slopes where the street pattern suddenly stops.
