Newton lies just west of Boston, and its outline is unusual. The Charles River curves around the city on three sides, marking much of its boundary, so from above Newton looks like a peninsula of suburban streets held inside a river bend. Inside it, the city is less one town than a set of villages, each with its own small centre.
Newton calls itself the Garden City, and its thirteen villages, including Newton Centre, Newtonville, West Newton and Auburndale, give the map a scattered, many-centred quality.
