Nīlokheri is a town in Karnal district, Haryana, on the Grand Trunk Road between Karnal and Kurukshetra. It was created shortly after Partition in 1947 as a planned township to resettle refugees from West Punjab. It was conceived as a model of self-reliant community development, with training centres, workshops and housing laid out together from the start.
That origin is still visible from above. Unlike older market towns with tangled lanes, Nīlokheri has a more regular street pattern, with rectangular blocks, straighter roads and clearly defined areas for housing and institutions. The Grand Trunk Road runs alongside as a broad, straight line, carrying traffic between Delhi and Punjab and giving the town a firm edge.
