Seasonal watercourses cross the landscape and are dry for much of the year. They affect how the city grows, leaving curving open corridors between districts.
Nyala is the capital of South Darfur and one of the largest cities in Sudan. It has long been a trading centre for the surrounding region, and it is the western end of a branch of the Sudanese railway, which ties it to the rest of the country. The airport, on the city's edge, is one of the largest open shapes on the map.
