Obanazawa lies in the north of Yamagata Prefecture, on the edge of the basin drained by the Mogami River. From above, the town centre forms a compact network of streets surrounded by rice fields, with hills and forested mountains rising to the east and roads winding into narrow valleys.
The town is best known for Ginzan Onsen, a hot spring village in a valley to the southeast, where wooden inns line a small river. Obanazawa is also known for heavy winter snowfall, and in winter the landscape is transformed, with the map's lines becoming the only visible structure in a white world.
