Oschatz sits in northern Saxony, roughly halfway between Leipzig and Dresden, on the small river Döllnitz. From above you can still see the outline of a medieval town. A dense core of streets surrounds the market square and the twin-towered church of St. Aegidien, and the line of the old walls still shapes the roads that circle the centre.
The town is also known for the Döllnitzbahn, a narrow-gauge railway that runs out of Oschatz into the surrounding countryside. Its thin line leads off the edge of the built-up area.
