San Juan Ostuncalco lies in the western highlands of Guatemala, in the department of Quetzaltenango, at an elevation where mornings are cool and fields climb the surrounding hills. It is a Mam-speaking area, and the town serves as a market and meeting point for villages scattered across the uplands around it.
The centre follows the pattern of many Guatemalan towns: a roughly regular grid around a central square with a church, set on the flattest ground available. Beyond it the order loosens quickly.
