Queimados lies in the Baixada Fluminense, the broad lowland that stretches north and west of Rio de Janeiro toward the foot of the coastal ranges. From above, the town is a patchwork of residential blocks laid out in short, slightly shifting grids. Queimados belonged to Nova Iguaçu until it became a separate municipality in 1990, and its layout still shows how it grew outward from these transport lines.
