Rorainópolis lies in southern Roraima, Brazil's northernmost state, a short distance above the equator. It grew along BR-174, the highway linking Manaus with Boa Vista, and the map still shows that origin. The road runs straight through, and the town unfolds on either side of it like a planned settlement laid onto the forest.
The streets form a regular grid of wide blocks, typical of towns founded through settlement programmes in the Brazilian Amazon.
