Saint-Avold is a town in the Moselle department of Lorraine, a short drive from the German border. Its history is closely tied to the coal basin of eastern Lorraine. Mining shaped the surrounding districts for much of the twentieth century and left housing estates and industrial sites that still show on the map.
The town is also home to the Lorraine American Cemetery. It holds more American war dead of the Second World War than any other US cemetery in Europe. Its formal grounds sit on the edge of town, a quiet geometric shape among woods and residential streets.
