Saint Michael is a city in Wright County, Minnesota, northwest of Minneapolis. On a map it shows two kinds of pattern side by side. Straight section-line roads left over from the rural survey grid divide the land into large squares. Newer neighbourhoods fill those squares with looping streets, cul-de-sacs and small ponds, softening the original geometry without erasing it.
The city covers a large area for its population, because much of its land was once farmland and township land that the community took in as it grew. That gives the map an unusual texture.
