Savelugu sits in Ghana's Northern Region, a short drive north of Tamale on the main road toward Bolgatanga and the Burkina Faso border. From above, that highway is the town's backbone. A looser network of streets and footpaths branches off it on both sides, and the built area thins out gradually into farmland and scattered settlements, with no hard edge.
The land around Savelugu is typical Guinea savanna: flat to gently rolling, cut by seasonal streams and dotted with small reservoirs and dugouts that hold water through the dry months.
