Seligenstadt lies on the south bank of the Main in Hesse, east of Frankfurt, where the river forms the border with Bavaria. The map has a clear centre of gravity. The town's history goes back to Einhard, Charlemagne's adviser and biographer. He founded an abbey here in the ninth century, and its basilica still stands in the centre, with the abbey buildings and gardens next to it. On the riverfront are the remains of an imperial palace from the Staufer period, and a ferry still crosses the Main.
