Shangchong lies in the hilly southeast of Guizhou province, in southwestern China. The terrain here is steep and heavily folded. On a map, the town takes the only shape the land allows: a long, narrow strip of streets running along a valley floor, with slopes rising sharply on both sides.
Roads leaving town follow rivers and streams or climb the hillsides in tight switchbacks.
