Soumagne sits on the rolling plateau of the Pays de Herve, east of Liège. From above it does not form one compact town. Instead, a cluster of villages and hamlets is joined by lanes that follow the land rather than a plan. The high-speed railway from Liège towards Aachen passes beneath the commune through the Soumagne tunnel, one of the longest rail tunnels in Belgium.
