Stanley is a town in north-west County Durham, built on high ground between the valleys of the region. It grew in the nineteenth century with coal mining, and its street pattern still reflects that history. From above, rows of terraced houses run along the slopes, the town centre sits on the ridge, and smaller former colliery villages surround it on the hillsides.
The height of the town is its defining feature. Roads climb from the valleys to the centre, and from the upper streets there are wide views across the Durham countryside. The pits closed long ago, and much of the land they occupied has returned to green space and woodland.
