Świebodzice lies in Lower Silesia between Wałbrzych and Świdnica, where the Sudeten foothills meet the flatter land to the north. The town has a long industrial past and is known especially for clockmaking. The Gustav Becker factory was founded here in the nineteenth century, when the town was called Freiburg in Schlesien, and its clocks sold across Europe. The tradition is still part of local identity.
