Szombathely lies in western Hungary, close to the Austrian border. On a map, the city has a compact historic centre of irregular streets and squares, surrounded by a ring of later districts. It is considered Hungary's oldest city. It was founded by the Romans in the first century as Savaria, a colony on the Amber Road, and later became the capital of the province of Pannonia Superior.
