Texas City lies on the western shore of Galveston Bay, between Houston and Galveston. The city's shape is defined by the water. The city is remembered for the Texas City disaster of 1947, when a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate exploded in the port. It was one of the deadliest industrial accidents in American history.
