Timimoun lies in the Gourara region of the Algerian Sahara, on the edge of the Grand Erg Occidental. The town sits on a low escarpment overlooking a wide sebkha, a salt basin, with palm gardens spread along the slope below. Timimoun is often called the red oasis because of its ochre earth architecture, including buildings in a distinctive Sudanese-influenced style.
