Tortiya lies in the north of Ivory Coast, in the Vallée du Bandama District, where the forests of the south give way to open savanna with scattered trees. The town is known for diamond mining. Deposits in the area were worked industrially for decades in the twentieth century, and artisanal digging has continued since, leaving traces in the land around the town.
