Uddevalla lies on Sweden's west coast, at the inner end of the Byfjord, where the Bäveån river reaches the sea. From above, the centre fills the narrow valley floor by the harbour, while residential areas climb the rocky, wooded hills on either side. The town was long known for its large shipyard, which closed in the 1980s. The former harbour and industrial areas have since been reshaped.
