From above, Undurkhaan is a compact block of streets set down in a very large landscape. The town sits on the Kherlen River, and the river's braided channels and floodplain form the most organic line on the map. Undurkhaan is the administrative centre of Hentiy Province in eastern Mongolia, and in 2013 it was officially renamed Chinggis City. The province is closely tied to Chinggis Khaan, and many accounts place his early life in the surrounding hills and river valleys.
