Laparelli's grid
Long straight streets cross at right angles along the length of the peninsula. The strict plan ignores the slope, which produces Valletta's famous stepped streets.

Valletta Map Poster & Print
Valletta fills almost the whole of the Sciberras Peninsula on Malta's northeast coast. From above, the city is a tight rectangular grid of long, straight streets, enclosed by thick angular fortifications. Grand Harbour lies to the southeast and Marsamxett Harbour to the northwest, so water nearly surrounds the town. At the tip of the peninsula, Fort St Elmo guards both harbour entrances.
The city was founded by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565 and laid out to a plan by the military engineer Francesco Laparelli. The streets were built on a strict grid despite the peninsula's slope, which is why many of them turn into long flights of steps. The whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the smallest national capitals in Europe.
A Valletta map poster is almost a diagram of Renaissance planning. Republic Street runs down the spine of the grid, bastions form a jagged outline, and the harbours frame both sides with complex creeks and wharves. Across Grand Harbour, the fortified towns of the Three Cities can be included for an even richer composition.

Bastions and ditches
Massive walls with sharp angular points surround the city. On the poster they create a bold, zigzag outline that makes Valletta instantly recognisable from above.
Two harbours
Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour enclose the peninsula on either side. Their creeks, docks and headlands give the map its intricate edges.

Valletta is a city people fall for quickly, whether on a first visit, a long stay or through Maltese family roots. Its fortified grid and double harbour make one of the most striking maps in the Mediterranean, clear and detailed at any size.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a date, a name or a Maltese phrase. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand echoes the honey-coloured limestone the city is built from.
