Vlotho lies on the Weser in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, where the river passes through the hills of the Weserbergland. From above, the Weser is the dominant line. It crosses the sheet in a broad band, and the town's streets gather on its bank before climbing into the surrounding high ground. A single bridge links the two sides.
A castle hill rises above the town, where the ruins of the medieval fortress still stand. The town grew as a river crossing and small trading place between Westphalia and Lippe.
