Wayaobu is the seat of Zichang County in northern Shaanxi, on the Loess Plateau. The land here is cut by deep gullies and ridges, and on a map the town fits into a narrow valley. Streets run along the valley floor, and the built-up area is long and thin, stretching wherever the flat ground allows.
Around the town, the landscape is a dense pattern of branching gullies, like the veins of a leaf. Roads climb out of the valley along side ravines, and terraced fields and small villages sit on the loess slopes.
