West Chicago began as a railroad junction, and that origin is still visible from above. Rail lines cross near the old centre and fan out in different directions, dividing the town into sections that each have their own street pattern. The town was first known as Turner Junction, named for the place where early lines met on the way west from Chicago. Today it is part of DuPage County's suburban belt.
