Wexford stands on the western shore of Wexford Harbour, where the River Slaney meets the sea on Ireland's southeast coast. The town rises gently from the water, and its map is shaped by the quayside. Vikings founded the town, and its name comes from Old Norse. Medieval walls once enclosed the centre, and a section survives near the Westgate tower.
