The town is a compact cluster of narrow streets and closely built houses, and it quickly gives way to fields. Yeola is known across India for Paithani, the silk saris with gold-bordered designs, and many households in the town work in weaving. It also has a place in modern history: in 1935 B. R. Ambedkar made a public declaration here that he would not die a Hindu, a step toward his later conversion to Buddhism.
