Amarante Map Poster
Amarante is a municipality in the state of Piauí in northeastern Brazil, on the right bank of the Parnaíba river, which forms the border with Maranhão. From above, the town is laid out along the riverfront, with streets running back from the water onto slightly higher ground, and the broad, sandy course of the Parnaíba dominating the edge of the map.
The river has always shaped life here, from transport and fishing to the everyday view across to the far bank, where the town of São Francisco do Maranhão lies in the neighbouring state. Amarante is also remembered as the birthplace of the poet Da Costa e Silva, who wrote the lyrics of the Piauí state anthem.
